Ride A Pet Mutations: Storm Mutation Types, Effects, and Stacking Rules

How Ride A Pet mutations work: the five storm mutations (Shocked, Volted, Rage, Void, Eternal), their multipliers, how pets and eggs get them, and replacement rules — current as of the latest available reporting.

Quick answer

Mutations in Ride A Pet permanently boost a pet's movement speed, per-second Cash, sale value, or a combination of these. They are only obtainable through weather events — storms that appear randomly in each server — where lightning can strike pets and grant one of five named mutations: Shocked, Volted, Rage, Void, or Eternal. A pet can hold only one mutation at a time, but a higher-tier strike automatically replaces a lower-tier one.

  • Keep your best pets in the pen (ranch) during mutation storms — they are more likely to be mutated there.
  • Pets in your inventory cannot be mutated; pets you are riding during the event can be.
  • Mutated eggs can hatch pets that already carry the matching mutation.

How pets receive mutations

Mutations are permanent value boosts: they can raise movement speed, increase per-second Cash earnings, or both, and they also raise the pet's sale value. The only way to obtain them is through weather events — specific storms that appear randomly in each server. During a storm, lightning can strike pets both inside and outside your base, regardless of the pet's Age or rarity. Pets placed in your pen have a chance of catching a mutation (the exact chance is not publicly documented), pets in your inventory cannot be mutated, and a pet you are riding during the event also has a chance to be hit. Because pets inside your base are more likely to be mutated and a fast-mounted pet can outrun the exact spot where a bolt lands, the standard practice is to keep your best critters inside the ranch during mutation storms.

Weather events and hatch mutations

Each weather event corresponds to one mutation family: Thunder applies Shocked, Volt applies Volted, Rage applies Rage, Void applies Void, and Eternal applies Eternal. Each event lasts 5 minutes and has an equal chance to spawn whenever the weather changes. While an event is active, all eggs on the map become mutated, and mutated eggs have a chance to hatch pets that carry the matching mutation. That means you can leave high-rarity eggs unhatched until they catch a mutation, then hatch them into already-mutated pets.

Named mutation effects

Multipliers reported for the five named storm mutations, as currently documented by community guides. Some values are reported inconsistently between trackers, so check the in-game readout after a strike:

Comparison

Comparison
MutationReported Effect
Shocked2x Speed and 2x Cash (and 2x sale value)
Volted3x Speed and 3x Cash (and 3x sale value)
Rage4x Speed and 4x Cash (and 4x sale value)
Void10x Cash; some trackers also report a 10x speed multiplier
Eternal100x Cash — the highest tier; some trackers also report a 100x speed multiplier

For Void and Eternal in particular, some references list only the Cash multiplier while others also apply the multiplier to speed, so treat the speed value as unconfirmed for those two tiers until you see it on your own pet.

Stacking rules: one mutation per pet, higher tiers replace lower

A single pet cannot hold multiple mutations simultaneously. However, if a pet that already has a mutation is struck by a higher-tier mutation during a storm, the lower-tier mutation is automatically replaced and upgraded — the pet loses the weaker bonus and gains the superior multiplier. Low-tier strikes cannot overwrite or downgrade higher-tier ones. Eternal is the top tier: any pet with an existing mutation that is struck by Eternal lightning has its original mutation replaced.

Observed mutation impact on live stats

Player-observed examples confirm the multipliers show up in the live readouts. A Capybara on a ranch displayed about $18/s before a Volted strike and about $57/s after, with its lightning speed value rising from roughly 376 to about 1.17K. A starting Snail that became Shocked jumped from 15 to 34 speed. Mutations act as a separate special-state modifier applied after the base-stat comparison, which is why a mutated mid-tier pet can outrun an unmutated rarer one — compare the post-mutation speed before deciding which pet is your main mount.

Which pets are worth mutating

Because mutations multiply rather than add to base stats, the same multiplier produces a bigger absolute gain on a fast pet than a slow one. Across gameplay reporting, the guidance converges on the same habits:

Mistakes to avoid

Problem
Spending mutation luck on a weak starter pet you'll replace minutes later
Fix
Mutate keeper pets, not throwaways — a mutation on a pet you keep helps every route afterward.
Problem
Mutating your rarest pet instead of your fastest one
Fix
Always target your highest-speed pet, and compare post-mutation speed before committing.
Problem
Having no pets staged when a storm hits
Fix
Keep your valuable pets in the ranch ready whenever a mutation storm starts.
Problem
Changing multiple pets at once and losing track of results
Fix
Review one change at a time so each mutation result stays easy to compare.

The pen-strike chance is not publicly documented, and event names outside the five storm mutations appear in community calendars without confirmed effect values — treat any such names as unverified until they show up in-game.
